BBC News Online reports a U.S. study that suggests that girls who are overweight at the age of 3 risk reaching puberty as early as nine years old. 

According to one theory, this happens because puberty is triggered by the hormone leptin, which is produced by fat tissue.

Studies also suggest that girls who reach puberty earlier than the "normal" age of 10 and above also start drinking alcohol and engage in sex at an earlier age.
