A child’s early reading skills affect his literacy test scores after 10 years, a new Statistics Canada study suggests. Those who read early had the ability to comprehend news articles, fiction and various documents better than the average child. Also, the literacy of a child is not dependent on his socio-economic background, gender or mother tongue. This study tracked a group of children and youth beginning 1994, and the result was released last November 2006. We're trying to understand the developmental process of children over time," said Tracey Bushnik, the study's author. "When you have lon¬gitudinal data you can find connections such as this over time." Having a high literacy score is important because it means that the child is able learn fast from books and other reading materials.
