Raise Smart Kid

After learning about general tips for choosing smart toys for your kids, we focus on toys for your preschooler.

Your preschooler likes to create things with his toys.  For him, toys are tools to express himself.  They also enhance his creativity and teach him how to work towards a goal.   They introduce him basic math concepts, encourages concentration, and enhance his ability to stick at a project and finish it.  He also makes basic science discoveries, for example, when he plays with water and sand.  The following are the best creative toys:

• building blocks
• plastic interlocking blocks
• blunt scissors
• play dough
• art materials, washable markers, large crayons
• simple construction sets
• modeling clay
• finger paints
• sand and water toys

The preschool stage is where your kid’s pretend play blossoms.    Pretend play is a lot of fun for her.  She moves toys and pretends that his toys talk and act, or she may prefer to play dress up and play roles with herself.  Toys that your kid use for imaginative play enhance her creativity.  They allow her to try on a different role, cope with feelings and fears, and learn by doing.  They also develop her language and social skills (when she plays with other kids).   The following are the best pretend play toys:

• dolls, doll stroller or basket
• transportation toys like non-electrical trucks, tractors, trains toy telephones
• dress-up clothes
• kitchen and housekeeping toys like play dishes and vacuum cleaners
• puppets and puppet theaters

Preschoolers are active and full of energy, that is why your kid enjoys active toys.  With these toys, he strengthens his muscles and develops his flexibility:

• balls of all sizes
• small sports equipment
• bicycles for 4- to 7-year-olds with 20-inch wheels and training wheels (all should wear bike helmets)
• play tunnel

Board and card games stimulate your preschooler’s  mind.  They encourage foresight and the ability to look ahead to see the consequence of an action.  They improve his numerical ability, and also encourage the mastery of strategy.  These kinds of games are more educational to your child if you participate.
